![]() Now that the basic functionality is pretty much working, I decided to give some real attention to the M1 capability. Day 3: 'Selected product is not installed' All I needed to do was claim the backups from the previous machine (the iMac), and Time Machine was back up and running. There was a little red alert button in Time Machine Preferences (but not on the menu bar). It's good that I did because Time Machine wasn't fully set up. I needed to do a Time Machine restore for another computer, and I realized I hadn't checked Time Machine on the Air. In any case, as soon as I could, I used Force Quit to kill the game. But, for whatever reason, the MacBook Air update decided to launch this game even before the boot process completed. I only tried that game once - about four months ago on the old iMac - I found it baffling and quit. I could do nothing to turn off the music until the reboot finished and I got desktop access.Īs it turns out, for some reason, the update decided to launch the Game of Thrones Apple Arcade game in the middle of booting up. About 20 minutes later, when the update finished and the M1 MacBook Air rebooted, music started to blare out of the Air while the Apple logo with the percent done indicator was still on the screen. System Preferences wanted me to update to Mac OS 11.4, and since this was a brand new system, I let it run the update. So I downloaded the M1 Chrome and just installed it over the original.īoom! The performance improvement was exceptional. In any case, I googled for a minute and discovered that Chrome had an Apple Silicon build. Controversy, heresy, and the Western Schism within the Catholic Church paralleled the interstate conflict, civil strife, and peasant revolts that occurred in the kingdoms. The Late Middle Ages was marked by difficulties and calamities including famine, plague, and war, which significantly diminished the population of Europe between 13, the Black Death killed about a third of Europeans. The theology of Thomas Aquinas, the paintings of Giotto, the poetry of Dante and Chaucer, the travels of Marco Polo, and the Gothic architecture of cathedrals such as Chartres mark the end of this period. In the West, intellectual life was marked by scholasticism, a philosophy that emphasised joining faith to reason, and by the founding of universities. Kings became the heads of centralised nation states, reducing crime and violence but making the ideal of a unified Christendom more distant. The Crusades, which began in 1095, were military attempts by Western European Christians to regain control of the Holy Land from Muslims and also contributed to the expansion of Latin Christendom in the Baltic region and the Iberian Peninsula. This period also saw the formal division of the Catholic and Orthodox churches, with the East–West Schism of 1054. Manorialism, the organisation of peasants into villages that owed rent and labour services to the nobles, and feudalism, the political structure whereby knights and lower-status nobles owed military service to their overlords in return for the right to rent from lands and manors, were two of the ways society was organised in the High Middle Ages. The Carolingian dynasty of the Franks established the Carolingian Empire during the later 8th and early 9th centuries in Western Europe before it succumbed to internal conflict and external invasions from the Vikings from the north, Magyars from the east, and the Muslims from the south.ĭuring the High Middle Ages, which began after 1000, the population of Europe increased greatly as technological and agricultural innovations allowed trade to flourish and the Medieval Warm Period climate change allowed crop yields to increase. In the West, most kingdoms incorporated extant Roman institutions, while the influence of Christianity expanded across Europe. The Byzantine Empire survived in the Eastern Mediterranean and advanced secular law through the Code of Justinian. In the 7th century, the Middle East and North Africa came under caliphal rule with the Arab conquests. The large-scale movements of the Migration Period, including of Germanic peoples, led to the rise of new kingdoms in Western Europe. Population decline, counterurbanisation, the collapse of centralised authority, invasion and the mass migration of tribes, which had begun in late antiquity, continued into the Early Middle Ages. The medieval period is itself subdivided into the Early, High, and Late Middle Ages, and the early medieval period is alternatively referred to as the Dark Ages. ![]() The Middle Ages is the middle period of the three traditional divisions of Western history: antiquity, medieval, and modern. Consequently, the glory an airplane passenger sees always is red on the outside, just as is a primary rainbow. That type of glory is called a brocken spectre. The diameter of the zone for each color of light is different. It sounds like the beautiful optical phenomenon known as the glory, also called an anti-corona or pilot’s bow. But the sunlight coming back toward the sun from the different raindrops interferes with itself to create circular zones of darkness and brightness. Some of the light emerges from the droplet to come back essentially toward the sun. Sunlight penetrates individual water droplets, be they in rain, fog or clouds, and reflects off the back sides of the droplets. The glory ring is caused by the phenomenon called diffraction. The clouds below provide the necessary water droplets. The Brocken spectre phenomenon is produced when a person stands above the upper surface of a cloud on a mountain or high ground with the Sun behind. The optical illusion is known as a Brocken spectre. But glories are most easily seen when one is riding on the shadow side of an aircraft above the clouds. hiker captured a rare sky phenomenon that appears as if there's an angel in the sky with a majestic rainbow halo cresting its head. Glories are common in high-latitude regions where the low sun angle allows a person to easily come between the sun and a fog or cloud bank. This is science were talking about here and these phenomena will reliably occur. Since the shadow of one's own head appears only in the anti-solar direction, it makes sense that the glory ring will always be in the vicinity of the head's shadow. I say comparatively rare optical phenomena, but of course thats misleading. One must look exactly in the anti-solar direction and there must be many water droplets in the region where the glory is to appear. Two requirements must be met if one is to see her or his own glory. If this event really took place, it was the climber's own shadow that he saw, and the ring of light was his own "glory" ring. ![]() Frightened, the climber fell to his death. The highest peak in the Harz mountains has lent its name to a peculiar natural phenomenon. Working his way across a narrow precipice, the climber was startled by the sudden appearance in the nearby mists of a human figure with a ring of light around its head. The glory is a part of a phenomenon familiar to mountaineers who know it as the Brocken Spectre.Īccording to legend, the name came from the unhappy circumstance of a climber on northern Germany's highest mountain, the Brocken. Most air travelers have observed glories in the vicinity of their aircraft's shadow on the clouds below. ![]() What’s more, the Zoho Books mobile application, which takes the top spot in our evaluation of the best mobile accounting apps, has more features than other similar apps, including the ability to record bills and bill payments. Without ES2022 public class fields, the code is very verbose. You have to remember to bind the event handlers. You have to understand how this works in JavaScript, which is very different from how it works in most languages. In addition to making code reuse and code organization more difficult, we’ve found that classes can be a large barrier to learning React. We’ll discuss this more in Using the Effect Hook. You may also opt into managing the component’s local state with a reducer to make it more predictable. To solve this, Hooks let you split one component into smaller functions based on what pieces are related (such as setting up a subscription or fetching data), rather than forcing a split based on lifecycle methods. However, that often introduces too much abstraction, requires you to jump between different files, and makes reusing components more difficult. This is one of the reasons many people prefer to combine React with a separate state management library. In many cases it’s not possible to break these components into smaller ones because the stateful logic is all over the place. This makes it too easy to introduce bugs and inconsistencies. Mutually related code that changes together gets split apart, but completely unrelated code ends up combined in a single method. However, the same componentDidMount method might also contain some unrelated logic that sets up event listeners, with cleanup performed in componentWillUnmount. For example, components might perform some data fetching in componentDidMount and componentDidUpdate. ![]() Each lifecycle method often contains a mix of unrelated logic. We’ve often had to maintain components that started out simple but grew into an unmanageable mess of stateful logic and side effects. Complex components become hard to understand We’ll discuss this more in Building Your Own Hooks. This makes it easy to share Hooks among many components or with the community. Hooks allow you to reuse stateful logic without changing your component hierarchy. With Hooks, you can extract stateful logic from a component so it can be tested independently and reused. While we could filter them out in DevTools, this points to a deeper underlying problem: React needs a better primitive for sharing stateful logic. If you look at a typical React application in React DevTools, you will likely find a “wrapper hell” of components surrounded by layers of providers, consumers, higher-order components, render props, and other abstractions. But these patterns require you to restructure your components when you use them, which can be cumbersome and make code harder to follow. If you’ve worked with React for a while, you may be familiar with patterns like render props and higher-order components that try to solve this. React doesn’t offer a way to “attach” reusable behavior to a component (for example, connecting it to a store). It’s hard to reuse stateful logic between components Whether you’re learning React, use it daily, or even prefer a different library with a similar component model, you might recognize some of these problems. Hooks solve a wide variety of seemingly unconnected problems in React that we’ve encountered over five years of writing and maintaining tens of thousands of components. If you just want to start learning Hooks, feel free to jump directly to the next page! You can also keep reading this page to learn more about why we’re adding Hooks, and how we’re going to start using them without rewriting our applications. As we will show later, Hooks also offer a new powerful way to combine them. Instead, Hooks provide a more direct API to the React concepts you already know: props, state, context, refs, and lifecycle. Hooks don’t replace your knowledge of React concepts. You can read more about the gradual adoption strategy for Hooks in the bottom section of this page. There are no plans to remove classes from React. Hooks are now available with the release of v16.8.0. Hooks don’t contain any breaking changes. But you don’t have to learn or use Hooks right now if you don’t want to. You can try Hooks in a few components without rewriting any existing code. Video IntroductionĪt React Conf 2018, Sophie Alpert and Dan Abramov introduced Hooks, followed by Ryan Florence demonstrating how to refactor an application to use them. React Native has supported Hooks since the 0.59 release of React Native. When upgrading, don’t forget to update all packages, including React DOM. React 16.8.0 is the first release to support Hooks. On this page, we’ll continue by explaining why we’re adding Hooks to React and how they can help you write great applications. You can start learning Hooks on the next page. Don’t worry if it doesn’t make sense yet! This new function useState is the first “Hook” we’ll learn about, but this example is just a teaser. |
